My name is Travis Lima. I am a designer and marketing lead at Paid Memberships Pro. I also write a lot about personal development, finance, and WordPress. I host a local South African podcast called “The Howzit Podcast”. And, I am an aspiring YouTuber 😀
Q. How did you come into your current field? Share a bit of the background?
A I started a graphic design freelance business back in 2013. I needed a website, and heard a lot about WordPress so I decided to give it a try. When I started reaching out to potential customers they were really impressed with my website.
I would often get asked about who built the website for me. Once they heard that I made it, they would usually ask me to build a site for them. This was the start of my WordPress career.
Q. What’s the most interesting project you have done to date in WordPress?
A I have had the monumental task of redesigning an e-commerce WordPress site that had over 7000+ products and variations. It was mainly done by myself and was a lot of work!
I am, however, really enjoying working in the WordPress product (plugin) industry. It is a different side of WordPress and I am learning so much about business and WP. Very satisfying.
Q. Have you ever been to any WordPress meetups or WordCamps? If yes did you learn anything useful?
A I have been to several meetups and WordCamps around South Africa and abroad! The most recent was WordCampe Europe 2019 in Berlin. For me, it is all about the people. WordCamps are a great place to meet new people and make some friends.
Q. What does your workstation look like?
A Sure can!
Q. What kind of tools/software do you currently use for your creations?
A I am an Adobe CC fan and have been for many years now. I often use Photoshop, illustrator, and Adobe Premiere. We use Slack, Zoom and P2 for our team communications. For hardware, I use a 2018 Apple MacBook Pro (it’s amazing) and a big 32inch Samsung monitor.
Q. What interesting feature do you think you would like to see in WordPress and is currently missing?
A I think WordPress is headed in the direction of a need that I saw a few years ago. When building sites, it was alway a bit of a mission to install a theme and figure out how the developers made the theme and what you need to do to customize it.
WP has been moving towards a more uniform structure. Making it easier to customize your site(s).
Q. Out of the current plugins and themes which one do you like the most and why?
A Paid Memberships Pro for sure. True, I do work there so obviously I am a bit biased. But in reality, PMPro allows you to set up a fully functioning membership site and get paid for your membership without anyone having the need to pay for the plugin. Plus, the plugin is 100% Open Source so you can’t go wrong.
As mentioned earlier, I am a big fan of the block editor.
Q. Which WordPress hosting do you use and would you recommend for your clients and others?
A Siteground. I would totally recommend them. Great support and reasonable pricing.
Q. Do you like/love what you currently do in WordPress?
A I LOVE what I am currently doing in the WP space.
Q. What would you like to do in the future in the current field or somewhere else?
A I would like to travel more. Meet new people in the WP space and form partnerships with other WP companies.
Q. Can you give us some reference for whom we should conduct an interview next and why?
A Andrew Lima, he is my brother and an amazing WordPress developer.
